On Tuesday, 21st September 2021, Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH), an environmental group in Germany said in a statement, it has launched the lawsuits against the automobile companies including BMW and Mercedes-Benz for refusing to company with the carbon emission targets.
Jurgen Resch, CEO of DUH said, with the litigation of the group, the non-governmental organization has been intending to compel Mercedes and BMW for putting an end to the climate harming city tanks for the purpose of phasing out the gasoline and diesel cars by the year 2030.
According to the reports, the DUH had previously requested BMW and Mercedes-Benz for phasing out the combustion engines by the year 2030, but both the automobile companies have declined for making any enforceable commitments, and the DUH had also demanded both the companies to reform their operations in a climate-favouring manner by significantly decreasing the emissions of carbon dioxide of the cars in accordance with the regulations of the German climate protection law and Paris climate agreement.
It has been believed that, the methods of both the companies have been insufficient for reaching the global emission targets, in spite of the fact that, both the companies have announced their intentions for moving away from the diesel and petrol vehicles.
The environmental groups Greenpeace and DUH have submitted the letters to the two automobile companies, along with Wintershall, a gas company and Volkswagen, urging the companies to give commitment to more ambitious targets of the carbon reduction.
