US EPA Considers Regulating Chemical Recycling

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of US has been considering to regulate the chemical recycling in the country, which has been a controversial technology, that has been aiming to convert the mixed plastic waste into the energy or fuel.

In the notice, the US EPA said, it wants more information regarding the so-called gasification and pyrolysis, which has been also known as the chemical or advanced recycling, and it has also been considering how they can possibly be regulated under the United States federal Clean Air Act.

According to the notice from US EPA, there had been a considerable confusion in the regulated community about the applicability of the section 129 of the Clean Air Act to the units of gasification and pyrolysis. The advanced recycling facilities, that have been aiming to convert the hard-to-recycle plastics, along with the tires, biomass, solid waste and several other forms of the waste into the fuels or the energy that have been using the solvents and high heat, and it has also been promoted by the plastics and petrochemical industries as a way for dealing with the plastic waste.

The American Chemistry Council has also urged the lawmakers of the United States for the purpose of passing the legislation, that is going to be incentivizing the advanced recycling, along with the 14 states of the United States have also passed the advanced recycling laws that is going to exempt the facilities of chemical recycling from the recycling laws and the solid waste.
