UK Government Approves New Nuclear Power Station

Power & Energy

On July 20, 2022, the government of the United Kingdom gave approval to a new nuclear power station that is expected to generate enough low-carbon electricity to power around 6 million homes. Kwasi Kwarteng, business secretary of the United Kingdom, said development consent was granted for the building of the plant on the eastern Suffolk coast of England.

EDF Renewables, a renewable energy company, which will partly fund the project, said the new nuclear energy plant will generate electricity for at least 60 years and will now employ 900 people, and the plant will cost 20 billion pounds.

The authorities said the plant will be making a substantial contribution toward target of the United Kingdom of making up to quarter of the power, which is consumed in the country comes from the nuclear energy by 2050. Julia Pyke, finance director for the project, said the benefits to the consumers in the king term will be outweighing the costs of construction.

Julia Pyke said Sizewell C will now give a big boost to the jobs and skills in nuclear supply chain companies across the United Kingdom, and it will strengthen the energy security of the United Kingdom and will also play a key role in their fight against climate change.

The government of the United Kingdom wants to decrease its dependence on imported gas and oil, particularly in the light of increasing energy prices amid invasion of Ukraine by Russia, and also generate cheap, and clean power domestically.
