LG Energy Solution, battery manufacturing company of South Korea, and the automobile company ‘General Motors’ announced that, both the companies are together going to be building their third electric vehicle (EV) battery cell production plant in the United States by investing around 2.6 billion dollars.
The joint of the companies known as Ultium Cells set up by the two companies in the year 2009, and the Ultium Cells is going to be constructing the new electric vehicle battery cell plant or facility in the city of Lansing located in the region of Michigan, US.
The preparations of the site for the new plan is going to be started in the upcoming months and the production of the battery cell has been scheduled to start in the year 2024, and the proposed unit ‘Ultium Cells’ at the city of Lansing is going to be supplying the electric vehicle battery cells to the Orion Assembly and several other battery assembly plants of the General Motors.
The production facility, which is going to around 2.8 million square-foot is going to be located on the land, which is leased from the General Motors, and it is also going to be creating 1,700 new jobs when the facility will be fully operational.
After entering into the first phase of the mass production of the EV battery cells in the beginning of the year 2025, this new facility is going to be having an annual capacity of around 50 gigawatt-hours of the battery cells, which will be enabling the annual production of 700,000 electric vehicles.
