High Demand for ECMO Machines Forces Patients onto Waitlist in UK

Healthcare

The hospitals in the United Kingdom are now leveraging every resource that is available for the purpose of helping the country to save live during the novel corona virus pandemic, and one of those essential tools has been the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

The ECMO machines had been one if the most aggressive forms of life support currently available in the country, and the ventilators can be the lifeline for the serious corona virus patients, and the prolonged use of the ventilators puts a strain on the lungs of the patients, and the ECMO machines are helpful in giving those lungs an opportunity for healing.

When the serious novel corona virus patients have been continuing to show the levels of low oxygen, in-spite of being placed on a ventilator, the doctors might recommend the ECMO for the purpose of giving the lungs of the patient a break.

Dr. Kevin Hatton, head of anaesthesiology at UK HealthCare said, the ECMO has been allowing the patients for turning the ventilator from very high setting to the low settings and allowing the lungs of the patients for resting and recovering on the ventilators, and the ECMO machine mainly works by pumping and supplying the oxygen to the blood of the patient from the outside of the body.

He also said, the novel corona virus has been really forcing them to use the ECMO machines in a very large cohorts rapidly in the times and places when they are not going to be able to do proper treatment by using ventilators.
