US: Cargill Launches Carbon Program for 2022 Farming Season

Cargill, a global commodities trading company announced that, it is going to be launching a carbon farming program for the farming season of 2022, which is going to be paying the farmers for the production practices, that will be responsible for lowering the carbon emissions along with capturing more carbon in the soils.

The RegenConnect program of Cargill is going to be using the farm data, remote sensing and sampling of the soil for the purpose of estimating the environmental benefits of the farming practices like not tilling the soils and planting the cover crops, and then paying the farmers 20 dollars for every ton of carbon that has been sequestered.

This project has been among an increasing number of the programs focused on the climate, that have been launched by several agriculture companies that are looking to decrease the carbon footprints across the globe.

Ben Fargher, vice president of sustainability at Cargill for the agricultural supply chain in North America said, the company ‘Cargill’ has also been signing up the farmers for the RegenConnect program for many months and it has also been expecting to pay the participants around 50 percent of the company’s annual payout in the month of December 2021.

The remainder is also going to be paid in the farming season of the year 2022, and the farm data is going to be collected and verified by Regrow, a carbon measure company, and Cargill has also having other and regional environmental programs in their pipeline, but the company is viewing the RegenConnect program at a headline program, which has been hoping to scale up in the upcoming seasons.
