US EPA to Set Tight Requirements on Toxic Waste from Coal Factories

On Monday, 26th July 2021, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said, it is going to be setting strict requirements for how the coal-fired power plants in the United States are disposing the wastewater, which is filled with mercury, lead and arsenic, that has been an important step in the reversal of one of the major environmental roll backs of Trump administration.

The US EPA said, it is going to reverse the rollback of trump era after conducting a review of the 2020 Steam Electric Reconsideration Rule based on science and for also identifying that, there are several opportunities for strengthening the limits for wastewater pollution discharge. The US EPA also said, it is going to adhere the limits, which were set prior to the rollbacks as it is going to undertake a formal process for the purpose of strengthening the rule.

Michael Regan, administrator of EPA said, in the process of conducting the review, the US EPA has determined that, moving ahead with the implementation of the existing regulations are going to be ensuring that, the resources of water are now protected, as they are now moving quickly for the purpose strengthening the protection of the water quality and also decreasing the pollution from the power plant, which can possibly contain toxic metals like selenium, arsenic and mercury.

When the US EPA have scaled back the limits in 2020, the environmental groups in the United States said, the changes are letting the industry for using less effective and cheaper methods of treatment methods on the polluted wastewater, which is responsible for putting the waterways at risk.
