Germany: Shell Launched PEM Electrolyser for Green Hydrogen Production

Chemicals Power & Energy

The largest refinery company of Germany ‘Shell’ and European Union are going to launch the largest electrolyser of its kind on the continent of Europe, and the company oil company Shell has already been looking towards the construction of an electrolyser ten times bigger by 2024 along with the aim of supplying green hydrogen to the industry in Germany.

The European green hydrogen industry has increasingly been driving the demand for the carbon neutral hydrogen for using it as a feedstock in the industrial processes. Starting from steel industry to the chemical industry, most of the energy intensive industries have been aiming the process for decarbonising through the green hydrogen, that has been resulting in a series of the new green hydrogen projects for the construction of the electrolysers, that can split the water for producing the green hydrogen.

Bart Biebuyck, executive director of Fuel Cells and hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU), said, the plant is going to have the potential for first decarbonizing the refining processes, along with providing assistant in the process of balancing the power grid, and the FCH JU, that has been established by the European Commission, along with the Hydrogen Europe Research and Industry Body Hydrogen Europe, have provided 10 million euros, that has been equivalent to around 50 percent of the funding for the project.

The hydrogen, which is going to be produced by the electrolyser is going to be used for the purpose of refining petroleum at the largest refinery of Germany, along with the Chemicals Park located in Rheinland.
