UEFA Nations League to have New Knockouts Round after 2024

A new knockout round for the Nations League will be added after 2024, according to UEFA’s confirmation. The announcement was made following the meeting of the executive committee of UEFA in Nyon, Switzerland.

To maintain continuity between the group phase, which concludes in November, and the Finals, which take place in June, the new format stipulates that the knockout round will be held in March. The winners and runners-up of the League A group will compete in quarterfinals with a home-and-away format, with the winners qualifying for the final four.

A home-and-away promotion and relegation playoff will be played between the third-ranked team in League A and the runners-up in League B, as well as the third-ranked team in League B and the runners-up in League C.

Aleksander Ceferin, president of UEFA, said that the new knockout phase of the tournament will provide teams with more chances to advance. The teams will be given even more opportunities to progress by introducing the new knockout phase while maintaining the same number of games within the international match calendar.

Another change is that the European qualifiers for the World Cup and European Championship will be more tightly organized, with 12 groups of four or five teams each.

Additionally, Aleksander Ceferin provided insight into the European qualifiers, stating that the new format will provide teams with an equal opportunity to qualify for major tournaments such as the World Cup and the European Championships.

Aleksander Ceferin continued by saying that the predictability of the European qualifiers has also been addressed and tackled, with a fresh new format that will offer all teams an equal chance of qualifying for major tournaments.

According to UEFA’s statement, the new formats for these competitions will take effect in September 2024. UEFA also decided that Russia, the host nation of the 2018 men’s World Cup, could not participate in March’s qualifying for Euro 2024 due to their 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
