Volkswagen, Onsemi Partner to Produce EV Inverters

onsemi, a market leader in intelligent power and sensing technologies, announced that it had reached a strategic agreement with the German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen AG (VW) to supply modules and semiconductors that make it possible to create a comprehensive electric vehicle (EV) traction inverter solution for the Volkswagen family of platforms for the next generation. The semiconductors are a component of an overall system optimization and offer a support mechanism for the VW models’ front and rear traction inverters.

onsemi will begin by delivering its EliteSiC 1200 V traction inverter power modules as part of the agreement. The EliteSiC power modules are pin-to-pin compatible, making it simple to adapt the solution to various motor types and power levels. Teams from the two businesses have been working together on optimizing the power modules for the next-generation platform for more than a year. Pre-production samples are currently being developed and evaluated.

According to Karsten Schnake, head of the operative and strategic semiconductor taskforce COMPASS at Volkswagen AG, the outstanding driving experience and quality that customers expect from a Volkswagen group vehicle are made possible by the superior performance and quality of onsemi’s traction inverter modules and their joint efforts to create the best system solution.

onsemi supplies VW with more than 500 different devices, including IGBTs, MOSFETS, image sensors, and power management integrated circuits (PMICs), at 19 wafer fabrication and packaging manufacturing sites. Onsemi’s vertical silicon carbide (SiC) production chain perfectly supports a secured supply chain and includes volume boule growth, wafering, substrate, epitaxy, device fabrication, best-in-class integrated modules, and discrete package solutions.

According to Simon Keeton, executive vice president and general manager, Power Solutions Group, onsemi, the company is able to provide OEMs with the supply assurance they require because of their extensive manufacturing footprint and robust end-to-end SiC supply chain. Simon Keeton added that their investments in expanding global production, particularly of silicon carbide, enable them to support Volkswagen’s rapidly expanding production of electric vehicles.
