Football Association: Gareth Southgate to Remain Manager of England

Sports

Mark Bullingham, chief executive of the Football Association England, said that Gareth Southgate has decided to remain England manager and he will lead the team towards Euro 2024 qualification.

Gareth Southgate has come to the conclusion that there is no reason to quit before his contract expires in December 2024, following a hard week that included England’s heartbreaking 2-1 loss to France in the FIFA World Cup 2022 quarterfinal.

The 52-year-old had been under a lot of pressure going into the FIFA World Cup tournament, which made him think about changing his job. However, the positive response from the team and fans has convinced him to stay.

The Football Association, which did not want to lose him, is relieved by Gareth Southgate’s decision because there are few replacements available. England’s European Championship qualifying schedule will start on March 23, 2023, with a trip to Italy and a home match against Ukraine three days later.

It was not appealing to try to succeed Gareth Southgate in such a short amount of time. The Football Association may have been forced to approach a foreign manager such as Thomas Tuchel or Mauricio Pochettino because of the absence of the leading English managers, including Chelsea’s Graham Potter and Newcastle’s Eddie Howe.

Mark Bullingham said that they are very happy to confirm that Gareth Southgate will continue as England manager and lead the team at Euro 2024 campaign. Mark Bullingham continued by saying that, they have always given Gareth Southgate and his assistant Steve Holland, their full support, and the preparations for the Euros start right now.

Gareth Southgate, who has been in charge of the English football team for six years, has been given time to decide by the Football Association. The former Middlesbrough manager wanted to know if he had the motivation to lead the team into another tournament.

Since England’s loss to Italy in the Euro 2020 final, Gareth Southgate has had a tough time, and he was hurt by the public outcry before and after the demoralizing Nations League campaign of England, particularly when he was booed by the fans after the 4-0 loss to Hungary in June 2022.
