UK’s Farm Subsidy Plan Increasing the Risk of Its Reliance on Food Imports

An inquiry from the UK parliament has warned that, the plans of the UK government for a post-Brexit scheme for the purpose of supporting the farming in the United Kingdom have been risking the increasing reliance of the United Kingdom on the food imports.

The scheme of the subsidies of the European Union, which is called as the common agricultural policy (CAP) and it is worth 3 billion dollars a year to the farmers of the United Kingdom. It had been one of the complaints of Eurosceptics, which had seen the ability of the long-running complaints of the Eurosceptics, who had also seen the ability of the United Kingdom for drawing up the country’s own scheme of the payments as one of the benefits of the Brexit Trade deal.

The ministers of the United Kingdom also said that, the new scheme is going to be used for increasing the benefits of the agriculture to the environment. Although, the MPs on the PAC (public accounts committee) has found that, there is still a crippling lack of details and information around the environmental land management schemes (ELMs) that has been designed for replacing the payments of the European Union.

The MPs also said that, by the own admission of the UK government, the confidence in the scheme has been looking blind optimism. Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) had not given any explanation of how these new schemes are making impact on the farmers of the United Kingdom.
