As part of plans to achieve the nation’s climate goals, cows in the UK might be given methane blockers to cut down on their emissions of the greenhouse gas. Following a consultation that began in August on how new types of animal feed products can reduce animal digestive emissions, farmers welcomed the proposal.
Green campaigners, on the other hand, were skeptical, arguing that the move would focus on techno fixes rather than reducing consumption and would not address the other major environmental harms caused by the beef and dairy industries.
There are around 9.4m cows and calves in the UK. Methane from cow burps and fertilizer is a significant supporter of ozone harming substance discharges; Around 14% of global emissions that are caused by humans are caused by cows and other farm animals.
In its net zero growth strategy, which was released last week, the government said that high-efficacy methane-suppressing products would be on the market by 2025 and could force farmers to use them if they worked. It stated that in a phased approach, they will investigate the role of industry and government in maximizing uptake of such products for suitable cattle farm systems.
This will include the goal of requiring, as soon as is practically possible, the use of products that have been shown to be safe and effective in compound feeds for cattle in England.
To achieve its climate goals, the government has been criticized for relying on untested technologies. Last week’s net zero strategy was criticized by a group of 700 scientists for its emphasis on carbon capture and storage, which they claimed had not yet been demonstrated on a large scale.
The methane blocker plan was also met with skepticism by Vicki Hird, head of farming for Sustain, an alliance of organizations promoting better food and farming. Cattle feed methane suppressants, which may be of some assistance, are among the technological solutions that industry and governments adore.
