BMW to End Electric MINI Production in UK and Shift to China

BMW will end production of its electric MINI cars in the United Kingdom and the company will move the manufacturing to China. BMW is planning to shift production to its joint venture in China. According to reports, BMW manufactures around 40,000 electric MINI vehicles a year at the company’s factory outside Oxford. BMW will pause production by the end of 2022.

Stefanie Wurst, chief of BMW MINI, has said the company’s factory in Oxford has been running inefficiently as it produces electric and petrol cars on the same line. Stefanie Wurst added that the production plant needed renovation and investment to build electric vehicles as the old assembly lines of BMW had been stripped off.

The report stated that BMW will continue to assemble its MINI vehicles with internal combustion engines in the United Kingdom into the 2030s for export to Japan, the United States, and the Middle East, while electric MINIs will be produced by Great Wall Motor Co. Ltd., a joint venture partner of BMW, and its production factory in Leipzig.

BMW has aimed to bring i1 and i2 entry-level electric vehicles by 2028. The BMW i1 and BMW i2 will not feature a rear-wheel drive layout such as the BMW i3. These electric vehicles will be based on the upcoming Neue Klasse architecture of BMW.
