In an effort to accelerate the transition of its British marque unit to battery-powered automobiles, Tata Group plans to establish operations in Europe for the manufacturing of electric vehicle cells.

According to Tata Motors Chief Financial Officer P.B. Balaji, the facility will also sell battery cells to the general public. The facility’s primary customers will be Jaguar Land Rover and Tata Motors.

P.B. Balaji stated that the production plans for batteries cover them well, but we will need some cell capacity when we get to Europe. He stated that Tata is completing plans and will soon provide more information, but he declined to provide a timetable or the facility’s location, and a lot of money will be invested.

The facility, which is heavy on intellectual property, will produce two cell chemistries: nickel manganese cobalt for Jaguar Land Rover and lithium iron phosphate for Tata Motors’ electric vehicles.

P.B. Balaji went on to say that the plan should help the business better control important parts of the supply chain, which has been affected by disruptions all over the world because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The CFO stated that the larger ecosystem benefits Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover.

Jaguar Land Rover is headquartered in the UK, a country where the auto industry has faced challenges following Brexit and the transition to electric vehicles. Other than the cell tower that is owned by China’s Envision Group, the nation has not attracted a lot of investment in large-scale cell facilities.
