Germany Delays Nuclear Power Exit to Tackle Energy Shortfall

Robert Habeck, economic minister of Germany, said that the planned exit of Germany from nuclear power by the end of 2022 has been officially delayed in order to increase energy supplies during an expected shortfall this winter.

The decision was made following a shortage in the electricity supply coming from France because of the fact that more than 50 percent of its nuclear power stations are offline. Robert Habeck said that the resulting gap in electricity supplies was being observed with concern, with the energy network of Europe in danger of being put under pressure that could potentially lead to power cuts.

The electricity, which Germany is not able to acquire from France, has been compensated for by the electricity produced by gas-fired power stations in Germany. But this involves using valuable supplies of gas that Germany is trying to save before the winter season arrives.

Three remaining nuclear power stations in Germany were due to be turned off at the end of this year, which will be the end of 11-year process. This decision to withdraw from nuclear power was made by the government of Germany.

The decision by Robert Habeck was a reaction to the current situation, including what he called an escalation of the situation in Russia.
