BASF Enters Power Agreements for Clean Energy Supply across the US

BASF has made a commitment to renewable energy solutions to power its sites across the United States, and has also entered into virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs) for solar and wind energy totalling 250 megawatts.

These agreements are designed to offset the grid-supplied and carbon-intensive electricity that is being used at over 20 manufacturing sites across the United States, starting from Texas to Michigan.

Michael Heinz, chairman and chief executive officer of BASF Corporation, said renewable energy is an essential tool to reach the ambitious goal of BASF of net zero emissions by 2050. He also said that they are committed to further improving their energy footprint in the region, and they are eager to drive the energy transition for chemical manufacturing in North America.

These combined agreements for the output of 250 megawatts of renewable generation capacity will possibly result in the purchase of over 660,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity per year, which is the equivalent of electricity consumed by over 90,000 average households in the United States.

Based on the estimates of the EPA, the agreements will offset over 472,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, and with these agreements in place, the share of renewable energy in total North American electricity consumption of BASF will increase to over 25 percent.BASF
