US FDA Approves Kellogg’s Petition to Address Deficiency of Vitamin D in Snacks, Cereals

The Kellogg Company petitioned the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to allow vitamin D fortification in grain-based bars and to raise the maximum levels of fortification that can be used in cereal.

As part of its Better Days Promise environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy, Kellogg Company is committed to addressing hidden hunger, or micronutrient deficiencies, through both fortification and inherent sources. Kellogg submitted a petition to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requesting that regulations regarding the fortification of cereals and grain-based bars with Vitamin D, a nutrient that is causing concern in the United States.

Vitamin D is hard to get from natural food sources like fatty fish, egg yolks, and some mushrooms, so more than 90% of Americans don’t get enough of it. Six out of ten customers, or 59 percent, say they want to eat more Vitamin D.

According to Nigel Hughes, SVP, Global R&D and Innovation of Kelloggs, fortified cereals and milk have long been a delicious and cost-effective way to get Vitamin D. Nigel Hughes, said that day-to-day foods such as cereal and grain-based bars can go even further toward assisting people in accessing and consuming Vitamin D, resulting in better days for the people of the US in 2030.

Kellogg is developing novel foods that make use of the nutrient’s naturally occurring sources and fortifying existing foods with Vitamin D. The first better-for-you cracker to contain a substantial amount of vitamin D from mushroom powder will be Pure Organic Crackers with Cheese and Vegetables. In January, the crackers will hit supermarket shelves.

Kellogg will continue to use ingredients and fortification to offer tasty, reasonably priced, and easily accessible options that can help customers consume more Vitamin D.

Numerous of our new products will feature Facts Up Front packaging callouts displaying the percent Daily Value to assist consumers in quickly identifying these foods. The Vitamin D content of every Kellogg food is listed on the Nutrition Facts Panel.
