China is facing a surge in COVID-19 cases after partially easing aspects of its zero-COVID-19 policy, says a top Chinese government health adviser. The warning from top epidemiologist Zhong Nanshan comes as official COVID-19 case numbers have decreased in China, a phenomenon widely distributed due to a dramatic falloff in testing because of the policy.
The government of China has made the changes to reduce the scope of the mandatory testing that will allow some COVID-19 infected people to quarantine themselves at home, and ending the COVID-19 lockdowns following rare protests over the restrictions in China.
Zhong Nanshan said that the epidemic in China is spreading rapidly, and under many circumstances, no matter how strong the control and prevention is, and it will be very difficult to completely cut off the transmission chain.
Across China, the urban areas have showed signs of a population that is either afraid of an increase in COVID-19 infections, and Zhong Nanshan that there had been signs that hundreds of thousands of people in are infected by COVID-19 in several major cities in China.
According to reports, China recorded only 1,661 new COVID-19 cases on December 10, 2022, down from 3,947 cases on December 6, and malls and markets have remained widely empty, with several businesses closed in the country.
