US Viewers Criticized Fox Sports for Ignoring Qatar’s Human Rights Record

The US viewers have criticized Fox Sports after broadcast of the opening day of FIFA World Cup for ignoring the human rights record of the host country. Qatar has been criticized for its treatment of migrants, with allegations of corruption in the bidding process for the World Cup, and its record on women’s rights and LGBTQ.

Different broadcasters such as Telemundo and BBC selected to highlight the concerns in the coverage of the first day of FIFA World Cup, where the host country lost to Ecuador after a great opening ceremony, which included contributions from BTS’s Jungkook and Morgan Freeman.

In contrast, Fox Sports has broadcasted everything from the air-conditioning in the Al Bayt Stadium to the different types of food available to fans to the welcoming secretary general of Qatar’s FIFA World Cup committee, Hassan Al-Thawadi.

Grant Wahl, one of the most prominent soccer journalist in the United States, also tweeted that big contrast between he coverage aligned to Qatar regime in the US on Fox Sports and the also coverage on the UK rights-Holder.

Fox executive producer David Neal said that he did not believe that the US viewers wanted to be distracted from the off-field issues during the FIFA World Cup Tournament.

They do think they have to talk about the legacy they leave, and by the time the World Cup is over, they will not be ignoring the issues that might arise during the tournament, said Ray Warren, Telemundo Deportes president.
