The government of the United States, through the US DOE, announced the first set of projects that are funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law of the US President, Joe Biden, to expand domestic production of batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), and for the materials and components that are currently imported from other countries.
A total of 20 companies in 12 states will receive a combined 2.8 billion dollars to build and expand their facilities to extract and process graphite, lithium, and several other battery materials, with manufacturing components, and demonstrating new approaches, including producing components from recycled materials.
This investment will be matched by the receivers to leverage a total of more than 9 billion dollars to boost US production of clean energy technology, and also create job opportunities. The investment will support US president’s goals for electric vehicles to make up 50 percent of all new vehicle sales by 2030, and to transition to a net-zero emissions economy by 2050.
Jennifer M. Granholm, US secretary of energy, said that this is a remarkable time for producing EV batteries in the United States, as the agenda of Joe Biden and investments supercharge the private industry to ensure their clean energy future is US made.
