Toyota and NREL Partner to Develop Megawatt-Scale Fuel Cell Systems

Business

Toyota Motor North America partnered with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of the US Department of Energy (DOE) to build, evaluate, and install a one-megawatt (MW) proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell power generation system at the Flatirons Campus of NREL in Arvada, Colorado.

The 1-MW fuel cell system integrates multiple Toyota fuel cell modules in a larger system to provide responsive stationary power. Through an earlier collaboration, NREL has demonstrated the use of an automobile fuel cell system for providing a carbon-free power for a data center.

This new system is at a significantly larger scale, with generating around 15 times more power, and is also capable of direct and alternating current output. Toyota has leveraged its more than 25 years of fuel cell development experience as it has designed the 1-megawatt system, with expanding on the expertise from the light duty fuel cell electric vehicle market.

Toyota is providing the fuel cell modules and is also working with Telios, a systems integrator, for the design, and building the system for delivery to NREL. Toyota has also developed an integrated control system to manage operation of the fuel cell modules to increase the efficiency and system of life.

This new system demonstrates a simplified design as a drop-in replacement to a conventional generator. The researchers of NREL will push the operational boundaries of the fuel cell system design to identify the limitations of the performance, with generating valuable data to aid with the development of the future applications.
