Germany and Canada Signs Hydrogen Deal

On the second day of the inaugural trip of Olaf Scholz, chancellor of Germany, to Canada, the two countries have signed a partnership for the transport and production of hydrogen.

Robert Habeck, economics minister of Germany, and Jonathan Wilkinson, energy minister of Canada, signed the agreement at a ceremony in the town of Stephenville that was attended by Olaf Scholz and Justin Trudeau, prime minister of Canada.

Justin Tradeau said that their target is clear, they are working towards the initial exports of hydrogen from Canada to Germany by 2025. He also said their outcomes are clear as well, by creating middle class jobs, the local growth while delivering clear energy will help in tackling climate change.

Olaf Scholz said the deal will take the partnership between the two countries to a more strategic level, and the chancellor of Germany has called the agreement an important step not only for strengthening their bilateral economic relations, but also for a sustainable energy supply for the future.

The area is considered to be a favourable location for the production of renewable hydrogen, as the region is very windy and sparsely populated. Currently, the cost of producing low-carbon hydrogen has been more expensive than purchasing natural gas, but experts believe that, hydrogen has the ability to decrease energy bills in the medium term.
