California Plans to Triple Sale of EVs by 2026

California is planning to triple its electric vehicle sales in the next four years to 35 percent of all new car purchases, which is an aggressive target set as a part of the goal to phase out the sale of gas-powered cars by upcoming decade.

The proposal from the California Air Resources Board will slowly increase the sale of new cars that are electric, plug-in hybrids, and hydrogen-powered to 100 percent by 2035. Around 11 percent of all new passenger car sales worldwide happen in California, giving the state a significant influence over the automobile market.

The people of California will still be allowed to drive gas-powered vehicles, and sell used cars, which means that the emissions will still be affected by the roadways of the state.

The hope of boosting the sales of electric vehicles will also require a major increase in the number of charging stations. California has also set a goal of 250,000 charging stations by 2035, and currently there are fewer than 80,000 charging stations in the public spaces of apartment buildings, and several other shared spaces.

The Energy Commission of California has approved spending of 314 million dollars over three years for the passenger car charging stations, and the Newsom has also added more in his proposed state budget.
