Nickel Asia and Shell Partner for Renewable Energy in Philippines

Emerging Power (EPI), renewable energy subsidiary of Nickel Asia and Shell has partnered to jointly develop, maintain, operate, and own renewable energy assets in Philippines. The joint venture aims to complete 1 gigawatt projects by 2028, with the aim of eventually contributing around 3 gigawatts to the renewable capacity of the country by launching a series of projects on the islands of Visayas and Luzon.

The new joint venture will concentrate on solar energy while also looking into the onshore wind energy and energy storage systems. According to the estimates, one gigawatt of solar energy can power the annual daytime consumption of over 1.2 million homes in the country.

Shell has a strong history in Philippines because of its offshore oil and gas operations. The well as the retail electricity supply arm of the company known as Shell Energy Philippines. In recent years, EPI has expanded its renewable energy portfolio in Philippines, and currently the company is operating at a 100 megawatt solar energy form in Bataan, and is working on pilot geothermal projects in Biliran and Mindoro.

Philippines has become a more appealing market for the renewable energy in South East Asia, primarily prompting regulatory action to improve the energy matrix of the country.
