Germany: BMW To Switch To Low-Cost Batteries For Its New EV Platform From 2025

The German automobile company ‘BMW’ is going to be switching to the next generation of the low-cost batteries for the company’s new electric vehicle platform from 2025 as the automobile companies around the world are battling to increase the prices of the raw materials.

For the company’s Neue Klasse underpinnings, the company is going to be using round cells instead of the prismatic ones followed into the footsteps of Tesla and this change is going to be delivering a decrease in the costs by around 30 percent.

The new round cells is going to be manufactured by the existing partners of BMW and the automobile company is currently buying the batteries from the Contemporary Amperex technology Co. Ltd. and EVE Energy Co., and Samsung SDI Co. of South Korea and Northvolt AB of Sweden.

The pricing of the battery has been important for the electric vehicles because the cells have been typically making up 80 percent of the price of a battery pack and also improving the technology and efficiency for typically delivering the annual decrease in the costs.

That trajectory has now come under the strain because of the record price increase of the main inputs such as nickel and lithium, which the challenging automobile company has forecast of soon selling the electric vehicles for a margin similar to the cars of combustion engine.
