Report: Instagram and Facebook Messenger Will not get End-to-End Encryption by 2023

Meta, parent company of Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, has not planned to launch the end-to-end encryption (E2EE) by default on the applications like Instagram and Facebook Messenger until the year 2023. In 2021, the company has successfully merged Instagram and Messenger chats, as a part of the company’s plan for creating the unified system of messaging across all the platforms of the company.

According to the reports, as the messages sent through the applications like Instagram and Messenger can possibly be end to end encrypted, but that option is not turned on by default and it is likely will not be turned on until 2023.

According to a source, Antigone Davis, head of safety at Meta has been attributing the delay to the concerns about the safety of the users, and since the end to end encryption only means that, the sender and the recipient will only be able to see their conversations, and he also said that, the company ‘Meta’ also wants to make sure that, this does not interfere with the ability to provide help in stopping the criminal activity of the company.

He said, once the end to end encryption will become available by default, then the company is going to be using a combination of the non-encrypted data across the different applications of the company, along with the information of the account and also the reports collected from the users for the purpose of providing help in keeping them safe along with assisting the efforts of the public safety.
