Volkswagen to Discuss Two New Plants in North America

Two sources said that Volkswagen’s supervisory board will meet in the coming days to discuss plans to build a new factory in the United States. One of the sources added that the board was expected to approve the project.

One of the sources said that the factory is a new plant for the Scout brand. Volkswagen said that it will be designed, engineered, and made in the United States, and production will start in 2026. Volkswagen did not say anything. The automaker previously stated that it had not decided whether or not to construct a plant for the brand.

To produce the ID, Volkswagen is expanding its current plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in the United States. International Harvester’s Scout and Travelall vehicles were forerunners in both function and style of popular SUVs from the Big Three Detroit automakers, such as the Ford Bronco and General Motors’ Chevrolet Suburban. However, a source told Reuters in May that the Chattanooga plant does not have enough space to do all of the Scout brand’s off-road electric pick-up trucks and SUVs.

Reaper quit building the Scout and Travelall in 1980, yet Volkswagen’s Traton SE business gained US truck producer Navistar in 2020, which possesses the Scout name. According to Volkswagen, reintroducing the brand is an important part of its plan to gain a 10% market share in the United States.
