Stellantis to Invest $155-Million in Three Indiana Plants to Produce EDMs

Stellantis announced that it will put $155 million into three plants in Kokomo, Indiana, to make new electric drive modules (EDMs). These EDMs will power future electric cars made in North America and help the US reach its goal of 50 percent battery electric sales by 2030.

The Kokomo-built EDM will be incorporated into vehicles designed on the STLA Large and STLA Frame platforms with more than 25 planned BEV launches in the United States between now and 2030.

The EDM is a one-stop solution for electric vehicle powertrains that combines the electric motor, power electronics, and transmission into a single module to improve performance and range at a competitive price. Each platform will be able to achieve a driving range of up to 500 miles thanks to the new EDM’s optimized efficiency.

According to Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, the company is setting the same foundational elements for the North American market as they continue their successful transition to a decarbonized future in their European operations.

Carlos Tavares added that they will offer their customers a variety of electric vehicles with a range at more affordable prices by combining the advantages of the EDM with their new BEV-centric platforms and cutting-edge battery technologies. They will accomplish this with greater adaptability and effectiveness thanks to their in-house manufacturing capabilities and expertise.

At the Indiana Transmission, Kokomo Transmission, and Kokomo Casting Plants, investments will be made. Kokomo Transmission will machine the gearbox cover, which will be cast at Kokomo Casting. The Indiana Transmission Plant will be responsible for gear machining and final assembly. After retooling, production is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2024. With the venture, in excess of 265 positions will be held across each of the three plants.

According to Mark Stewart, COO of Stellantis North America, these investments will capitalize on the core manufacturing competencies of the local workforce in the areas of casting, machining, and assembly. All of these skills will be required even as the market moves toward an electrified future.
