Premier League Charged Manchester City with Breaking Financial Rules

The Premier League has charged Manchester City with breaking over 100 financial rules. Between 2009 and 2018, it referred the club to an independent commission for alleged rule violations. Additionally, it claimed that the club had not cooperated with the investigation since December 2018.

The city said that the charges surprised them, and are supported by a lot of hard evidence. The commission has the authority to impose penalties that can include expulsion from the Premier League as well as a fine and point deduction.

The club claims that Manchester City is surprised by the alleged breaches of Premier League rules, especially considering the EPL’s extensive engagement and extensive supply of detailed materials. The club applauds the appointment of an impartial commission to investigate this matter and evaluate the extensive collection of undeniable evidence in support of its position.

Since being taken over by the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008, City has won the Premier League six times. The Premier League said in a statement that City broke the rules that said they had to provide accurate financial information that gives a true and accurate picture of the club’s financial situation.

This data covered club revenue, which includes revenue from sponsorships and operating expenses. Rules requiring full details of manager compensation from the 2009-10 to 2012-13 seasons, when Roberto Mancini was in charge, and player compensation from 2010-11 to 2015-16, are also alleged to have been broken.

From 2013-2014 to 2017-2018, the Premier League claimed that City violated UEFA regulations, including Financial Fair Play (FFP), as well as Premier League regulations regarding profitability and sustainability. UEFA, the governing body of European football, ruled in 2020 that City violated FFP regulations severely between 2012 and 2016.

After the German newspaper Der Spiegel published leaked documents in November 2018 claiming that the club had inflated the value of a sponsorship deal, UEFA began its investigation into City. The commission’s proceedings will be kept private and heard in private.
