The soccer federation of Belgium has cancelled plans to set up a World Cup fan zone where supporters can follow Belgium games live on the big screens amid lack of interest for the tournament in the country.
Belgium will players its FIFA World Cup opener against Canada in QATAR, and the football federation of Belgium has decided against setting up a fan zone, with several other attractions along with big screens in the town of Vilvoorde, Belgium.
Manu Leroy, head of marketing and communications at Belgium Football Federation, said that since it is not possible for most fans to travel to Qatar, they wanted to bring the World Cup to them. But they have sold very few tickets than they had planned, and it is clear that at the moment, and event with big screens are less popular than in other years.
The football fan zone was set to be open on the matchdays of Belgium during the group phase, as well as during the knockout stages of the tournament, with the tickets on sale for around 10 dollars each.
The Belgium football federation said that the fans who had already purchased tickets will be reimbursed, and fewer than 1,000 tickets had been sold for the fan zone for three group games of Belgium.
Many private initiatives aiming at collecting fans of Belgium together have been cancelled across the country, where soccer is one of the rarest activities uniting the Walloon and Flemish communities. Earlier November 2022, plans for a large World Cup indoor fan park in the country were also banned after the organizers failed to sell enough number of tickets.
