Ford Dropping Production of Fiesta to Focus on EVs

Ford has announced that it will stop the European production of its classic Ford Fiesta sedan in 2023 to focus on electric vehicle production in Europe. The death of the Ford Fiesta was bookended by the energy crisis across the globe. The Ford Fiesta was launched in 1976, when the world needed more energy-efficient vehicles after gas prices increased globally following the OPEC oil embargo.

IHS Markit’s Tim Urquhart, a European automotive analyst, said that it is another sign of the electrification of the European car market. It certainly reaffirms the commitment of the company to electrification and refocusing of the assets.

This move marks the company’s latest attempt to transform itself into an electric vehicle company. Ford has stumbled in the era of electric vehicles, and impatient with the speed of change, investors have pushed Ford to redouble its efforts to release a complete line of electric vehicles representing 2 million EVs each year.

The end of Fiesta was a step in the electric vehicle plans of the company. Once the best-selling car in Europe, it will end production in the country a year earlier than planned amid decreasing sales. By 2030, Ford wants all its passenger vehicles to be fully electric in Europe.
