Netflix Sets Up First Internal Studio to Expand Video Games Range

Netflix Inc., is creating its first in-house video game studio in an effort to be less dependent on third-party creators, and expand its gaming offerings. According to Netflix, the new studio will be based in Helsinki.

Amir Rahimi, vice president of game studios at Netflix, said that this is another step in their vision to build a games studio that will bring a variety of deeply engaging and delightful original games, with no advertisements and in-app purchases to their hundreds of millions of members across the world.

The new games studio will be the fourth studio for Netflix, after the company acquired another studio based in Helsinki, including Next Games and Boss Fight Entertainment. Netflix has brought on Night School Studio in September 2021.

Currently, Netflix has 31 mobile games in its catalog that are free of advertisements and in-app purchases but will only be available to subscribers. The company is planning to have 50 games available by the end of 2022.

Netflix embarked on its push into video games in 2021 as a way to diversify its streaming offerings as growth stagnates. The new studio does not yet have a time line for the production.

Amir Rahimi also said that it is still very early, and they have more work to do to deliver a great gaming experience on Netflix. These four gaming studios, each with different focus areas and strengths, will be developing games that will suit the diverse tastes of their members.
