Amazon has acquired Cloostermans, a company specialist in mechatronics based in Belgium. Cloostermans is building technology to move and stack heavy pallets, and robotics used to package products for customer orders.

Amazon is using those products as a customer of Cloostermans for e-commerce operations, and it is making the acquisition to speed up its research and development and deployment in that area.

Frederik Berckmoes-Joos, chief executive officer of Cloostermans, said they are very happy to join the Amazon family and extending the impact they can have globally. He said that Amazon has raised the bar for how supply chain technology can benefit customers and employees, and they are looking forward to be part of the next phase of this innovation.

The bigger picture for Amazon is, it will likely be doing a lot more in warehouse robotics in the years ahead for meeting the demands of its expanding e-commerce operation. A report suggested that along with higher wages, with further automation can be one of the way to offset the crisis.

Amazon has been expanding robotics work in Europe in recent years, including start a robotics innovation lab in Italy, and several operating R&D facilities in Germany, and Amazon is hiring aggressively in robotics in both places and everywhere.
