US Government Approved Funds for States to Build Car Charging Network

The government of the United States has approved ambitious plans by 34 states and Puerto Rico to create a national electric vehicle (EV) charging network as the United States starts its transition away from gas-powered transportation.

This new approval means 900 million dollars can start to flow to the states that are tasked with using money from the large infrastructure law of Joe Biden, president of the United States, to form the network of chargers across the United States. Building a reliable and convenient network is important to spur more adoption of the technology that itself is key to decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, which generally cause global warming.

This approval means residents in some of the states can see more charging stations along major travel corridors as early as possible. Joe Biden has a goal of ultimately installing 500,000 EV chargers across the United States, and building a network of fast-charging stations across 53,000 miles of freeways.

Nico Larco, director of Urbanism Next Center at the University of Oregon, said launching this type of funding is an enormous step in getting the charging network, which is something they absolutely need if they are going to see the deployment and adoption of electric vehicles. Nico Larco also said they do not have the capacity to power anywhere near the fleet that they need.
