Nissan Eager to Push US Tax Credit on EVs

Nissan said it is more aggressively pushing electric vehicles to take advantage of a new US tax credit that gives around 7,500 dollars in credits. Joe Biden, the vice president of the United States, signed the landmark climate change and healthcare bills into law in August 2022.

This tax credit can be used to defray the cost of buying an electric vehicle that is made in the United States. The Nissan Leaf electric car is among the models, that qualify for the tax credit, but under the law, the vehicles must have a battery built in North America with minerals that are mined or recycled on the continent to the eligible vehicles.

Joji Tagawa, chief sustainability officer at Nissan, acknowledged the qualification process had been complex but he also stressed that Nissan was eager to take advantage of the law to alleviate the costs to the customer. The company is in the process of making a thorough analysis at the moment.

Nissan was among the first automobile companies to bank on zero-emission fully-electric vehicles with the Leaf that went on sale in 2010. Over 600,000 Leaf electric cars have been sold across the world so far.

Several major automobile companies in the world have announced investments to speed up the move toward electric vehicles.
