EU Countries Not Prepared to Tackle Alzheimer’s Disease as New Treatments Progress

The countries in the European Union have been still lagging behind in the process of tackling the Alzheimer’s disease in spite of the calls by the World Health Organisation for taking the urgent action as the cases of the disease in the region of Europe have now expecting to double.

At the same time, there has been lack of proper infrastructure in the national health systems across the European Union, that has been presenting a challenge for the launch of the promising new therapies for the treatment of the disease.

Alzheimer Europe, an NGO that represents the dementia patients, has estimated that, in the year 2018, around 7.8 million people of the European Union have lived with dementia, and out of which around two-thirds had been women, and the Alzheimer’s disease has been making up between 60 percent and 80 percent of the cases of the dementia in the European Union.

Jean Georges, executive director of Alzheimer Europe said, these numbers have been increasing because of the ageing population of the continent of Europe, and they are also expected for doubling in the future.

Jean Georges also said, without having a significant change in how the Alzheimer’s disease along with several other types of dementia can possibly be treated and prevented, and they are also expecting that, the numbers of the people having the dementia might get doubled by the year 2050 to around 14 million, and therefore, it should be clear that, urgent action is going to be needed across Europe for the purpose of supporting the research and care for dementia.
