European Union Agreed to Increase Renewable Energy Targets

A provisional agreement to increase the proportion of renewables in the energy mix of the European Union was reached on Thursday by negotiators from the EU’s parliament and countries in the EU. This is another step in the EU’s green transition.

The agreement reached after late-night negotiations, according to the European Council, which represents the 27-member states, will raise the renewable energy target to 42.5 percent of total consumption by 2030. 32% is the current objective.

To meet the EU’s objective of becoming environment unbiased by 2050, the EU’s leader bonus upheld an objective of 45%. The council and the European Parliament agreed on an additional 2.5% indicative top-up to reach 45%, leaving room for such an increase.

The EU’s green transition has accelerated as a result of Russia’s war in Ukraine. Over the past year, the bloc has increased its use of renewable energy and decreased its dependence on Russian fossil fuels.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that, the understanding reported Thursday would take into consideration more desire and quicker carry out of renewables. Von der Leyen stated that this will simultaneously assist us in achieving climate neutrality, enhance our energy security, and boost our competitiveness.

Gas consumption in the EU decreased by 19.3% between August 2022 and January 2023 compared to the average for the same months in 2017 and 2022, according to EU data. According to a report by Ember, a global energy think tank, wind and solar generated a record 22% of the EU’s electricity last year, surpassing gas, which accounted for 20%, for the first time. 16% of power came from coal.

A disagreement over the role of nuclear energy in the production of hydrogen caused the negotiations between the European Parliament and the European Council to drag on into the night. The agreement ultimately enabled nations to utilize nuclear technology.

In accordance with the agreement, renewable non-biological fuels should account for 42% and 60% of the hydrogen used in industry by 2030 and 2035, respectively. If EU nations that produce hydrogen from nuclear power also reduce the proportion of hydrogen produced from fossil fuels, they would be able to reduce their overall target for the production of renewable hydrogen by 20%.
