Report: Renewable Energy Surpassed Coal in the US in 2022

Power & Energy

The U.S. Energy Information Administration announced that in the United States, renewable energy-generated electricity will surpass coal for the first time in 2022. After first surpassing nuclear generation last year, renewables also did so in 2022.

The expansion of wind and solar power significantly fueled the expansion of renewable energy and contributed 14% of the domestic electricity production in 2022. Biomass and geothermal sources generated less than 1%, while hydropower contributed 6%.

Stephen Porder, a Brown University professor of ecology and assistant provost for sustainability, stated that although he is pleased to see that they have crossed that threshold, it is only the first step in what must be a very quick and cost-effective journey.

California created 26% of the public utility-scale sun powered power, trailed by Texas with 16% and North Carolina with 8%. Texas, which produced 26% of all wind energy in the United States, produced the most, followed by Iowa (10%) and Oklahoma (9%).

According to Gregory Wetstone, president and CEO of the American Council on Renewable Energy, this explosive growth is largely driven by economics. Gregory Wetstone went on to say that, over the course of the previous ten years, the levelized cost of wind power has decreased by 70%, while the levelized cost of solar power has decreased by an even greater amount, by 90%. In a lot of the country, renewable energy is now the most affordable new source of electricity.
