NASA and Axiom Space have created cutting-edge spacesuits for the astronauts on the Artemis III mission, who will be traveling close to the south pole of the moon. Axiom’s spacesuit, the AxEMU (Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit), offers enhanced mobility, the most recent technology, and additional protection against lunar hazards.
Under a commercial services contract, NASA bought Axiom Space’s moonwalking services and encouraged the company to get more commercial clients.
The AxEMU is based on the prototypes made by NASA’s Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU), which made spacesuits for different places. Axiom Space will be in charge of the design, development, qualification, certification, and production of flight training suits and support equipment, including tools, in order to make the Artemis III mission easier.
Putting astronauts on the moon and maintaining the United States’ leadership position in space require the partnership between NASA and Axiom. Maxim’s cutting-edge spacesuits will not only enable the first woman to walk on the moon, but they will also open doors for more people to investigate and lead science on the moon than ever before, said NASA chairman Bill Nelson. They will expand on NASA’s long stretches of study and expertise.
Collins Aerospace and Axiom Space will compete for future task orders for moonwalking and spacewalking services. Lara Kearney, supervisor of NASA’s Extravehicular Action and Human Surface Versatility program, said that, NASA is driving the way in empowering a developing space economy by utilizing industry capacities.
