Ukraine will participate in the European Union’s joint purchasing platform for gas. Ukrinform reports that European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson made this statement during a meeting of the Committee on Industry, Research, and Energy (ITRE) of the European Parliament on Thursday, March 9, 2023.
They have included Ukraine in the gas joint purchasing platform with the intention of assisting in the acquisition of 2 billion cubic meters more gas. They are chipping away at market changes, with regards to the promotion cycle. Additionally, she added that, she continues to engage with the IAEA to insist that the occupation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is a crime.
Simson asserts that Russia’s manipulation of our gas markets in order to destabilize the Union and create uncertainty preceded the invasion of Ukraine.
The European Commissioner said that, gas supplies have been utilized as leverage to bribe Member States and divide them, weakening their resolve to oppose an illegal and unjust war. These actions made it abundantly clear that the Union should end our decades-long massive dependence on Russia.
Ukrinform reported that last year, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Energy Mykola Kolisnyk stated that the country intends to contribute to the REPowerEU plan, which calls for the establishment of an EU energy market that is affordable, secure, stable, and long-lasting as well as the gradual elimination of dependence on Russian fossil fuels by 2030.
