Samuel Garcia, the governor of Nuevo Leon, which is close to the US-Mexico border, said that Tesla Inc. could begin producing its first automobiles in Mexico next year. The company is close to receiving the final permits that will allow factory construction to begin in Nuevo Leon.

According to Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel Garcia, they are waiting for the final permits, once that is finished, they can start, hopefully this very month, in March 2023. The first automobiles should be available by 2024. Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, made the announcement last week, saying that the Austin, Texas-based company had chosen Mexico as the location of its next gigafactory with plans to produce a next-gen vehicle.

According to Mexican officials, the $5 billion investment will make the factory the largest in the world for producing electric vehicles. Samuel Garcia said that the manufacturing of components like chips and batteries could occur in subsequent phases of the plant.

The local mayor said that, last week the site in Santa Catarina, which is adjacent to the state capital of Monterrey, spans several thousand acres. Samuel Garcia said that the investment would serve as an anchor for Tesla suppliers and that the approval given to Tesla by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who had previously voiced concerns regarding the scarcity of water, sent a positive signal to other potential investors.

Samuel Garcia mentioned that he had sent Lopez Obrador technical memos regarding the state’s industrial water supply. It is like a kind of guide. By authorizing and supporting Tesla, the president sent a message to the entire world that they should come to Mexico.
