Meta Launches New AR and VR Plans

Technology

According to reports, Meta intends to launch its first pair of display-equipped smart glasses and a neural interface smartwatch in 2025. In the meantime, the company plans to release its first pair of full-fledged augmented reality glasses in 2027. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has predicted that these glasses will one day be used as much as smartphones.

During a presentation of Meta’s AR and VR efforts’ roadmap on February 28, 2023, the specifics were made available to thousands of Reality Labs employees. After a series of setbacks and broader cost cutting across the company, they demonstrate how Meta plans to continue investing in consumer hardware. This story did not get a response from a Meta spokesperson.

Regarding the VR roadmap, employees were informed that Meta’s flagship Quest 3 headset, which will be released later this year, will be two times thinner, at least twice as powerful, and is also more expensive than the Quest 2.

Due to front-facing cameras that pass-through video of the real world, it will feature prominent mixed reality experiences that do not fully immerse the wearer, like the recently announced Quest Pro. Mark Rabkin, Meta’s vice president for virtual reality, told employees during the presentation that the company has sold nearly 20 million Quest headsets thus far.
