A long-term strategic partnership between GlobalFoundries and General Motors Co. has been announced, establishing a dedicated capacity corridor solely for GM’s chip supply. GF will manufacture for GM’s key chip suppliers at GF’s advanced semiconductor facility in upstate New York under this first-of-its-kind agreement, bringing a crucial process to the United States.

This agreement supports GM’s strategy to reduce the number of unique chips required to power vehicles that are becoming increasingly complex and technologically advanced. Chips can be produced in greater quantities using this strategy, and they are anticipated to offer improved quality and predictability, maximizing high-value content creation for the end customer.

The auto industry’s electrification, autonomous driving, and connectivity technologies are based on semiconductors, which have been at the center of the global chip shortage that has impacted automakers over the past few years.

Doug Parks, GM’s executive vice president of Global Product Development, Purchasing, and Supply Chain, stated that as vehicles become technology platforms, they anticipate that their requirements for semiconductors will more than double in the coming years. In addition, Doug Parks stated that GM will be able to meet this demand while simultaneously providing new technology and features to our customers thanks to the supply agreement with GlobalFoundries.

According to Dr. Thomas Caulfield, president and CEO of GlobalFoundries, they are committed to collaborating with their customers in novel and creative ways to best address the challenges of today’s global supply chains. GlobalFoundries will expand its production capabilities solely for GM’s supply chain, allowing them to strengthen their partnership with the automotive industry and New York State and further accelerate automotive innovation with manufacturing based in the United States for a supply chain that is more resilient.

According to US Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, this first-of-its-kind agreement between GlobalFoundries and General Motors is going to propel the economy of the Capital Region and ensure that Upstate New York remains one of the nation’s leading hubs for semiconductor manufacturing, which is so essential to the auto industry supply chain.
