Automobile

According to a report, on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, according to the people familiar with the situation, that Ford Motor Co. and Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD Co. are discussing the sale of a manufacturing plant in Germany.

According to the WSJ report, the factory under consideration is the Saarlouis plant, where vehicle production is scheduled to end in 2025. The report also stated that the talks are still in their preliminary stages and may ultimately fail.

A request for clarification was sent to Ford, which does not immediately respond. The plant produces Ford’s Focus compact model. Automakers are under pressure to cut costs as a result of projected economic slowdowns in the United States and Europe and rising costs for battery materials for electric vehicles.

After announcing plans to eliminate up to 3,200 jobs at a factory in the German city of Cologne, Ford stated that it would decide how many jobs will be eliminated in Europe by the middle of February. According to the report, Ford is also evaluating the interest of around 15 potential investors; however, the terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
