Pike Solar, a brand-new solar power plant that is being built to serve Colorado Springs Utilities customers, has been acquired by Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions (DESS). Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions is a commercial brand that is not regulated. Global solar power developer JUWI Inc. (JUWI) sold the solar project to DESS.
Pike Solar will provide 175 megawatts of electricity to Colorado Springs Utilities customers on approximately 1,310 acres with more than 414,000 solar panels just outside the city limits of Colorado Springs, Colorado. About 46,300 homes could be powered by that amount of electricity.
Colorado Springs Utilities will acquire Pike Solar’s generated electricity as part of a 17-year agreement. JUWI is in charge of the project’s engineering, procurement, and construction under the terms of the acquisition. DESS is looking for the solar modules.
JUWI and DESS will each be responsible for operation and upkeep. DESS now has three 248-megawatt solar projects in Colorado thanks to this addition.
Chris Fallon, president of Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions, said that they are pleased to continue expanding our solar portfolio in Colorado. Chris Fallon added that Colorado Springs Utilities’ goals for renewable energy will be supported by this project, which will also enable Colorado Springs Utilities to provide customers with a variety of cleaner energy options and lower energy costs.
According to Travas Deal, acting chief executive officer for Colorado Springs Utilities, this is an exciting development for them because Pike Solar will be the largest solar facility on their system and represents a significant step on their journey to diversify their energy mix. Travas Deal went on to say that initiatives like Pike Solar are essential to their ability to achieve their Energy Vision objective of cutting carbon emissions by 80% by 2030.
