Sports

With a 3-1 victory over Real Madrid, Barcelona became the first team since the competition’s reorganization and relocation to Saudi Arabia to win the Spanish Super Cup.

In a lucrative deal for the Spanish football federation, Robert Lewandowski, Gavi, and Pedri each scored a goal on Sunday at King Fahd Stadium in Riyadh to give Barcelona its first Super Cup trophy since 2018 and the first since the tournament’s Final-Four format began in 2020.

It was also Barcelona’s first title since Lionel Messi left for Paris Saint-Germain and former player Xavi became coach in 2021. After receiving a pass from Lewandowski, Gavi scored from close range in the 33rd minute. Just before the end of the first half, Gavi assisted on a breakaway to double the lead.

In the 69th minute, Pedri scored from close range after another breakaway was set up by Gavi. Karim Benzema provided Madrid with a late consolation goal. Since 2014, this was Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti’s first final defeat. A record 14 times have Barcelona won the Super Cup. There are 12 Madrid players.
