Wind Produced Record Amount of Electricity in the UK in 2022

Power & Energy

The National Grid reports that Great Britain produced a record amount of wind-powered electricity in 2022. The second highest amount of electricity generated after 2020 came from renewable and nuclear power sources rather than gas and coal from fossil fuels.

One fundamental strategy for dealing with the effects of climate change is to use green power in place of fossil fuels. In addition, sources like wind and solar are significantly less expensive, which should eventually result in lower utility bills.

As the effects of global warming are already being felt, scientists, governments, and the United Nations emphasize the importance of switching to renewable energy because the UK experienced its hottest year on record last year.

According to the National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO), gas remained the single most important source of electricity in 2013, while wind turbine-generated electricity continued to gain importance. In total, renewable and nuclear power generated 48.5% of electricity, while gas and coal power stations generated 40%.

Around 20GW of electricity was generated by wind, or more than 70%. That amounts to approximately 1700 homes being heated for a year. On December 30, 2022, wind turbines produced 20.918GW, breaking the previous record.

More than half of the country’s electricity came from renewable and nuclear sources during five months of the year, including February, May, October, November, and December. Additionally, coal use, the most polluting fossil fuel, decreased. It produced just 1.5% of electricity in 2022, compared to 43% in 2012.

More of Great Britain’s electricity will come from greener sources as it expands its capacity for renewable energy sources like solar farms and wind turbines.
