Tesla will become the leading luxury car brand in the United States for 2022 after surpassing BMW in luxury vehicle sales in the first time in 2023. Since almost 25 years ago, no American automaker has held this title. Only 23,244 vehicles outpaced Tesla in 2021, but 156,612 outpaced Tesla in 2022.
In 2022, Tesla will have delivered one million vehicles worldwide, with over 491,000 cars sold in the United States, an increase of 44%. In 2022, luxury sales in the United States decreased by approximately 8%, as did the overall market. The US vehicle registration data revealed that Tesla had a 124,786-vehicle advantage over its closest luxury competitor.
According to Tyson Jominy, vice president of data and analytics at J.D. Power, luxury car buyers want electric vehicles, but the company that only sells EVs is currently leading in sales. Tyson Jominy went on to say that if automakers want to be at the top of the luxury market, they must defeat Tesla with electric vehicles.
2022 was a remarkable year for Tesla. Production and vehicle deliveries both increased by 47% and 40%, respectively, year over year. In the fourth quarter of 2022, it produced 439,701 electric vehicles and delivered 405,278 of them.
In 2022, Tesla’s first year past the million-unit mark, it produced and delivered 1,369,611 electric vehicles. Those figures do not include the delivery to PepsiCo in December of the first of its all-electric Class 8 Semi trucks.
According to Shaun Bugbee of BMW North America, there has been a substantial demand for electric vehicles, and their gate represents our current volume limitation in terms of supply.
