On Wednesday, January 11, 2022, champion Manchester City fell short of the League Cup after a shocking 2-0 loss to struggling Southampton in the quarterfinals. Sekou Mara and Moussa Djenepo scored twice for Southampton, who are last in the Premier League, in the first half. City never really tried to get back into the game.
The hosts doubled their lead five minutes later when Djenepo spotted City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega off his line and curled a stunning effort into the top corner. Sekou Mara scored his first goal for Southampton in the 23rd minute, connecting successfully with a whipped cross by Lyanco.
The introduction of Kevin de Bruyne and Erling Haaland as substitutes in the second half failed to ignite a revival for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, who have won the League Cup six times since 2014.
James Ward-Prowse, the captain of Southampton, said that his team played without fear and praised the new manager, Nathan Jones. When you’re struggling in the league, these games are special to play in. They were aware that this was a fantastic display and a distraction from the league.
When you’re in our position, it’s always hard. We have received new ideas and energy from the manager, who has been excellent. He wanted the team to be bold and aggressive, but in the past, they had a lead at halftime and then lost it. They thoroughly deserved the victory because they demonstrated a different aspect of our game.
